Grade 6 is an exciting year at St. Joseph School as students are prepared for junior high. Children are divided into two homerooms, but taught by both sixth grade teachers. The exception is math, which is taught by the junior high math teacher. Religion is integrated into all subject areas in 6th grade. The social studies curriculum for sixth grade offers the opportunity for much integration with the language arts.
Sixth grade students continue to participate in the buddy system. During the school year, they participate in several art/social activities with their first grade buddies, giving them an opportunity to demonstrate their skills as positive role models. Students in sixth grade are also eligible to apply and interview for the Peer Mediation/ Peer Education Program at the end of the school year.
Religion: In 6th grade, the curriculum focuses on the following areas: Major themes in the Old Testament, heroic men and women in Scripture, major events of the first 300 years of the Church, God’s revelation of Himself through the Bible and His Son Jesus, the Liturgical Year, Catholic teachings, prayer, and the Mass. Students also have the opportunity to help plan for, and participate in, the liturgy of the school Mass several times throughout the school year.
Grammar: Through the writing process, sixth graders practice many types of writing such as poetry, original short stories, reports, letters, and essays.. Grammar is taught with an emphasis on parts of speech, comma usage, capitalization rules, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, spelling, and then applied by students in their original writing.
